Hotdog! It’s a flying sausage!

I work at an office in town. I usually take my lunch to work with me – a sandwich and an apple, or a piece of cheese and a few crackers. Last week, a hotdog stall parked just beneath my office window. The smell of fried onions wafted up through the open window. Oh boy, it smelled good! That day, I had a cucumber sandwich on white sliced bread for my lunch. I took it out of my lunchbox and it was soft and soggy. It didn’t look very nice. I thought to myself, ‘Do you know what, I am not eating this. I am going to have a hotdog!’ I went down and ordered one, with onions, mustard and ketchup. There is a park just next to my office, so I went there. I was just about to take my first delicious bite when I tripped over a kerb. I clenched my hotdog, but the sausage flew out of the bun – straight onto a little old man who was sitting on a park bench. He was just minding his own business, reading his newspaper. Next thing he knew, a flying sausage hit him and there was ketchup and mustard all down his T-shirt! I apologised profusely and gave him some tissue out of my bag. He quickly cleaned himself up. Happily, he saw the funny side and he laughed. A passing seagull swooped down, grabbed my sausage and flew off with it. I thought to myself, ‘Do you know what, it just wasn’t meant to be for me and that hotdog.’ I didn’t buy another one, I just went back to the office and ate my soggy cucumber sandwich. By Laura.

The missing ring

Robert's mother was very sad. On Saturday, she lost her favourite ring when the family went for a walk in the forest. Robert's dad went back on Sunday morning to try to find it. He looked everywhere but he couldn't see it because the ring was very little and it was dark under the big trees.

"I'll buy you another sliver ring just like the one you lost," he said to Robert's mum that evening. "But I loved that one!" she answered.

On Monday morning she was still unhappy so Robert said, "Let's go for another walk after school. Perhaps we will finnd your fing if we look again very carefully." "Good idea, Robert," she answered.

So later that afternoon, they drove back to the forest. They enjoyed walking there. They kicked the leaves with their feet and listened to all the birds in the trees.

Suddenly a lovely red, spotted butterfly flew out of the trees and down on to the ground in front of them. "Look at that!" Robert said. When Robert's mother looked through her camera to take a picture, she saw something on the small leaf which was under the butterfly. It was her missing ring!

"I can't believe it!" she said. "A butterfly has shown us where I dropped my ring!" It was a very good end to the day.

When Howard was a teenager, he often went to restaurants with his mother and father. He liked doing this so much that he decided not to buy lots of clothes and CDs; instead, he used his money to visit France and eat in good restaurants. He also bought a lot of French and English cookbooks – he says he has more than two hundred and fifty!

So why did he decide to open a restaurant? Simply because he loves cooking. Has it been an easy thing to do? He says it’s expensive to start your own restaurant and it’s much more difficult to cook for fifty people than to cook for your family, but he’s sure he’s done the right thing.
