It was a small, friendly community with two farms and a number of old cottages round the village green. I realized very quickly that although in many ways it appears unchanged, in reality hardly anything is the same. All the pretty cottages are there, of course, and both the picturesque farmhouses. But none of the inhabitants are country people. All of them are commuters, who leave early every morning for the nearby town. Neither of the farmhouses is attached to a farm these days; the land has been sold and is managed by somebody in an office somewhere who has little interest in the village itself. There are a few new houses, but they have no local character; you can see the same style anywhere in the country. The whole of the village, in fact, has been tidied up so much that it has become nothing more than just another suburb. 1. When the writer revisited his village, he quickly realized that _____________. A. the village changed a lot in appearance B. everything has almost changed C. all the pretty cottages as well as the farmhouses have been built D. the residents of the village are all commuters 2. A. the village now has no local character B. all the new houses are the same style C. the village is tidier than it used to D. the village has become nothing but a suburb 5. Passage 1:

By adopting a few simple techniques, parents who read to their children can substantially increase their children’s language development. It’s surprising but true. How parents talk to their children makes a big difference in the children’s language development. If a parent encourages the child to actively respond to what the parent is reading, the child’s language skills increase.

A study was done with two- to three- year-old children and their parents. Half of the thirty children participated in the experimental study, the other half acted as the control group. In the experimental group, the parents were given a two-hour training session in which they were taught to ask open-ended questions rather than yes/no questions. For example, the parents should ask, “What is the doggie doing? “ rather than “Is the doggie running away?”. Experimental parents were also instructed in how to expand on their children’s answers, how to suggest alternative possibilities, and how to praise correct answers.

At the beginning of the study, the children did not differ on measures of language development, but at the end of one month, the children in the experimental group tested 5.5 months ahead of the control group on a test of verbal expression and vocabulary. Nine months later, the children in the experimental group still showed an advance of 6 months over the children in the control group.

4. What was the difference between the control group and the experimental group?

A. The training parents received.

B. The age of the children.

C. The books that were read.

D. The number of children.

5. What conclusion is best supported by the passage?

A. Parents should be trained to read to their children.

Passage 2: A combination of water, salt, air pollution, sun, sand and wind is destroying the huge statue just outside Cairo. This five-thousand-year-old statue, which has the body of a lion and the face of a human being, is too badly damaged to be completely saved.
